VENASQUE

Classified among the "most beautiful villages of France", this village which gave its name to Comtat Venaissin is bathed in a unique light. From its limestone cliffs Venasque dominates the Comtat plain with Mont-Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail in the background.

It is surrounded by middle-aged ramparts and "Sarrasines" towers, of which the remains are relatively well-preserved.

The Siffrein cathedral was built late VIth/early VIIth century.

- a famous baptistry, one of the oldest in France, undoubtedly built on the site of a pagan temple with materials from the Gallic-Roman era and altered in the XIth, XIIth, XIIIth and XIXth centuries,

Baptisms, through immersion, took place during earlier eras, twice a year : the day before Easter day and the day before Whit Sunday.

Nowadays baptisms are celebrated throughout the year.

  • Additional visits :
Notre Dame church, inside which you will discover an Avignon primeval relic and a splendid altarpiece,
Cherry trees and vines form a crown at the foot of the cliffs of Venasque, emphasizing and truly setting off the entire site.  The “Cherry fraternity” was based here.  Thanks to their skilled work and perseverance, the Mont-de-Venasque cherries are now renowned as the best top-of-the-range French cherries.
