Comtat Venaissin – The Tuscany of Provence and its 4 Hilltop Villages

The Comtat Venaissin irresistibly evokes Tuscany with it’s gentle landscapes, isolated farms in the middle of lush fields and surrounded by irrigation ditches, its gentle climate, its mosaic of cultures and its 4 perched villages.

Pernes-les-Fontaines was the capital of Comtat Venaissin from 968 to 1320, followed by Carpentras from 1320 to 1791.

Pernes les Fontaines

Known as "The Pearl of Comtat", one of the "most beautiful areas of France", "Town associated with commercial art"... you will discover its architectural heritage and rich traditions of past-times... its 40 fountains, 3 fortified gates, clock Tower, Ferrande Tower with medieval frescos, the covered cross, chapels, outdoor medieval market, the Notre Dame church that dates back to the XIIth century and its splendid XVIIth century baroque organ.

Carpentras

Carpentras la Comtadine, "town of art and history" is one of the most poetic of Provence.  It offers the visitor a variety of beautiful reminders of past-times : l’Hotel Dieu and its XVIIIth century pharmacy, the Gothic style Saint Siffrein cathedral, the orange gate – remaining relics of the ramparts, the oldest active synagogue in France, the Roman arch dating back to the 1st century, the XVIIIth century aqueduct, the Boyer Passage and the markets and many a privately-owned mansion.

Four perched villages

Venasque - Beaucet - Méthamis - Blauvac .
These four perched villages are definite visits not to be missed
among the major sites of Comtat Venaissin.
