Sault,
from Latin saltus - country of forests - was an important centre
of prehistoric occupation from as far back as the Mousterian era
until the more recent Neolithic age.

Before
the Romans, the entire area was occupied by the Albici/Albiens or
Albiques tribe, their name Alba meaning - white country – now "Country
of Albion". This region unified with the Vaucluse department
the 25/6/1793 and currently has approximately 1 200 inhabitants.

Due

en Provence was elected by the Department of the Environment to
be listed among the twenty best French sites to be classified as
"World Inheritance" by UNESCO.

Old
capital of the region, Sault en Provence, located
on a rocky outcrop dominating Les Gorges de la Nesque,
the valley which bears its name, is an ideal starting
point for excursions to the Mont-Ventoux, Les Gorges
de la Nesque, La Vallée du Toulourenc, Plateau
d’Albion, the Lure mountain, the Luberon and other
sites close to the Drôme and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.
The
communes of Saint-Christol-d’Albion, Monieux, Aurel
and Saint Trinit make up the old county of Sault.
Each one conceals its own church or chapel
of Romanesque times and the vestiges of a rich past
which you will discover whilst following a route
bordered with fields of lavender, the colour and
perfume of which will bring your senses alive.
