MAZAN
|

|
In
the heart of Comtat Venaissin, at the foot of Mont Ventoux, Mazan
is an authentically Provencal village.
|

|
|
The
Gallic-Romans left a number of vestiges, including 64 monolithic
sarcophagi, after which period Mazan was fortified in the Middle
Ages. Ramparts surround the old village but visitors can enter through
the original gates. The XIIth and XIVth century church, listed XIth
century Notre-Dame-de-Pareloup chapel and the historical and folk
museum in the Pénitents Blancs chapel are well-worth a visit.
In
the XVIIth century, the Sade Counts, joint Lords of Mazan with Causans,
built their residential castle there.
In
Mazan, vines are cultivated and Côte-du-Ventoux wines are
produced here. Muscatel grapes are also grown here and are a delight
to taste.
A
maze of little country lanes, Mazan is rich in Roman and Gallic-Roman
vestiges. A small river, Auzon, meanders through the parish.
A
gigantic area of gypsum is worked in this area and is one of the
most significant in Europe.
